baseballs and bats

Baseballs are made of good stuff now-days. Whenever I try, I can't make the cover come off it, even though I hit it so hard that it went soaring past the outfield and over the woods (and that was a home run) but it didn't get a scratch or dent! I also note the bats are good when made of metal, but I tried a wooden one and it got a splintering crack, and the next player up got a single and it still broke.
