Some Newbery news

Today I drew a picture of ∞ balloons with boxes of sand tied to them. Try to guess why. That should get me a lot of comments! The Newbery winners got displayed today. None of them were ones that more than 1 person read at my mock Newbery, except for 1 book that 5 people read and didn't like it that much. O'l Mom posted them on her blog. http://teachingyourmiddleschooler.blogspot.com/2011/01/2011-newbery-awards-announced.html I hope that it snows!

  1. Okay, I'll take a shot. You were depicting your proposal for saving the Outer Banks, right?

  2. Or maybe this is the story behind the picture:

"While government authorities continue to reject rumors that they have, using genetic modification, bred the world's largest-ever tabby cat, yesterday's airlift of some 37,000 pounds of cat litter to an undisclosed location has some people wondering."

  3. Wow, very good guess. I might even use it for the offical reason.

  4. Okay, here's one more:

"An international team of distinguished scientists today revealed the result of more than two decades of research: a form of sand that is not only lighter than air, but lighter than many gases that are lighter than air.

"In order to dramatize their discovery, the scientists tethered a large number of boxes of their 'ultra-light' sand to helium balloons. At a given signal, the boxes raised the balloons toward the sky, rather than the other way around, and drifted off toward parts unknown.

"Unfortunately, the only photographer who took the whole thing seriously enough to show up insisted on standing on his head while capturing the event, resulting in the inverted image you see before you now.

"Nevertheless, the scientists were exuberant, and spoke volubly about the many possible practical applications of their sand, none of which they could actually come up with at the moment.

"As the sand-balloons drifted out of sight, their eventual destinations unpredictable and unknown, one scientist was heard to ask, in a low and nervous voice, 'Um, is that all the sand we made?'"
